Drunk Driving Fatalities Drop to Lowest Rate since 1950

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced that U.S. fatalities due to drunk driving fell to a record low number in 2009, declining by 7.4% from 2008, with a 19% decrease since 2000. This represents the lowest number since 1950.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatalities related to drunk driving (involving drivers with a blood -alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher) were reduced for all vehicle types, with the largest decline for motorcycle riders (16%). (For more information, go to http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811363.pdf).

While these declines are greatly encouraging, the threat of drunk driving is certainly not gone. In fact, drunk-driving fatalities in 2009 made up a larger percentage of all traffic fatalities than in 2008. The startling statistic is this: drunk-driving fatalities currently represent 32% of all fatalities. In Washington State, while the total number of all fatalities in reduced from 521 in 2008 down to 492 in 2009, the number of drunk-driving-related fatalities actually increased, from 183 in 2008 up to 206 in 2009, which represents a 13% increase. Other state increases include:

Connecticut +4.2%

Delaware +2.3%

Dist. of Columbia +11%

Hawaii +24%

Indiana +1.9%

Iowa +7.9%

Kentucky +4.3%

Maine +12%

Maryland +12%

Nebraska +25%

New Mexico +8.6

North Dakota +15%

Rhode Island +48%

South Dakota +51%

Vermont +92%

Wisconsin +3.9%

Given that drunk driving is 100% preventable, clearly more work is needed to eradicate drunk driving completely. We need to continue with proven methods including providing support for law enforcement officers who help keep our roadways safe, strengthening laws that require ignition interlock devices on vehicles of convicted drunk drivers, improving technology in vehicles, and delivering quality education to the community regarding the dangers and prevention of drunk driving. These combined efforts are certain to deliver results and support the continued reduction of senseless deaths on our nation’s roads.
